Taiwan: The Chinese Threat | Investigate Asia Taiwan is one of the most advanced democracies in the world. It’s also one of the most threatened. Despite being one of the world’s leading economies, having its own president, government, flag and anthem, no country recognises it. The problem is that China has always considered Taiwan to be one of its own provinces. Even today, President Xi Jinping does not rule out using force to claim it back. But what’s different now is that both sides seem to be becoming more militant… For decades, the majority of people in Taiwan wanted nothing to change. They were careful to avoid offending China while enjoying the freedoms and lifestyle of not living under a dictatorship. Wayne is one of those Taiwanese people who wants this status quo to continue. His business depends on China but he doesn’t want reunification. “Everyone knows it, Taiwan is an independent country… but you don’t have to shout it from the rooftops, that’s all…”. Why Is The Yen So Devalued Now? Japanese Economy Explained

After WW2, Japan transitioned to a state-controlled economy, shifting production from weapons to consumer goods. The Bank of Japan managed credit allocation, which played a central role in Japan's success. From 1985-1989, the country experienced a credit-fuelled bubble, with real estate and stock prices soaring. The 1990 stock market crash led to land and asset price collapses, bankruptcies, and economic stagnation. Critics accused the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Japan of mismanaging the economy during the bubble and subsequent recession.

The global economy is a pyramid scheme | End of the Road (full documentary)

There was a time when one earner could support an entire family. However, due to escalating costs in the 1970s, it became necessary for wives to enter the workforce. By the 1990s, even two incomes were insufficient, leading families to abandon savings. By the 2000s, with both partners working and no savings, families began borrowing well beyond their means to cope with inflation. This documentary traces the global economic crisis from the Bretton Woods Agreement to the Nixon shock and the Occupy Wall Street movement. It reveals how the U.S. Federal Reserve has led not only the American economy but also the global economy to function much like a Ponzi scheme. Since the pandemic, debt expansion is out of control. Vote vs. money: Americans are trapped in myths | Who Rules America? (3/6)

President Dwight Davis Eisenhower, a military man himself, warned America about the rise of “unwarranted power” in the Military-Industrial Complex. Over half a century after his prophetic speech, experts analyse the growth of said complex and its influence on American and world politics. Political scientist William Hartung and anti-war activist David Swanson are a few of the interviewees to discuss the trillion dollars spent every year on weapons that are not needed, but heavily lobbied for. Oil expert Michael Klare suggests that the most powerful lobby of all is that of the oil industry or energy writ large – coal, natural gas, uranium – which are tied to other powerful economic interests such as automobile, highway construction, tourism. Former New York Times reporter Chris Hedges says the power of the military and corporations has led to a transformation of the US economy: “It’s a global Neo-Feudalism. It’s one that is unassailable, completely untouchable, and more powerful than the host governments.” ------- Chapters ▷ 00:00 – Ike Eisenhower ▷ 01:28 – Military-Industrial Complex ▷ 04:08 – The influence of contractors ▷

The film explores the significance of our debt situation, looking at true stories behind the situation, from a debtors' prison in Mississippi to the world’s most notoriously indebted country. Josef Kleindienst, one of the only developers to have built on the islands, takes us on a tour of his luxury properties, designed as resorts for the super rich. Nokia - We Were Connecting People | Documentary about the former market leader in mobile phones

This film tells the rise and fall of Nokia and the Finnish mobile phone industry from grassroots, the point of view of the basic engineers and experienced by those who made the miracle happen and then faced the destruction. Many ended unemployed, some moved to new areas of work, and few found a new innovative entrepreneur in themselves. Today, something new may be smouldering in the ruins of Nokia. A film by Arto Koskinen Once upon a time there was a large Finnish company that manufactured the world’s best and most innovative mobile phones. The company was called Nokia. Nokia’s annual budget was larger than that of the Government of Finland. People who got a job in that company rose to an undefined higher caste in which abundance was guaranteed till the end of their life. They were often envied for this reason. Luckily other Finns were also able to enjoy the Nokia name. Even an Egyptian market vendor would call Finnish tourists ”Mr or Mrs Nokia” upon hearing from where they came. Mobile phones changed the world. They have

French Collection is a daytime competition for Channel 4 (UK) where three amateur dealers with an eye for profit get a day at a French market, a set budget to spend and a veteran dealer on hand to provide his expert advice. Their challenge? To beat their rivals to buy vintage pieces and collectables that they think will make them the biggest profit back home. Spanning just three days, each of our competitors has one day to buy their items, one day to restore them, and one day to sell them for the highest possible price. Having scooped the best that the picturesque towns and villages’ markets have to offer, the three contestants return to their home countries where they have just one day to transform the items they have bought with the remainder of their budget: this is the point at which an old pair of armchairs get stylishly updated with some designer fabric; a dated brown chest of drawers

"Health for Sale" - Documentary about the market with pharmaceutical drugs

The worldwide pharmaceutical market is dominated by the so-called Big-Pharma, which is composed by no more than 10 pharmaceutical companies based in USA or Europe. Thanks to the TRIPS Agreements, created by the WTO (World Trade Organization) in 1995, medicines is treated like any other goods. This means that the pharmaceutical companies owning the large number of patents on drugs worldwide can act as monopolists deciding and imposing the prizes. Further more they can decide the type of research to be made, without taking into consideration the needs of developing countries. Tobacco industry and its deadly strategies - Smoking harms people and nature

A film about the world of smoke and ecological deserts; about the cultivation of tobacco and its disastrous effects on Africa’s farmers and youth. Smoking has become less of a threat to the health of the developed world. Although consumer habits and cultivation have drastically changed in the northern hemisphere, the smoking industry now endangers the health of the rest of the world. A caravan of smoking cowboys and friendly camels invade Asian and African countries, carrying promises of a consumers’ paradise overseas. The souls of indigenous women and teenagers are conquered throughout the Third World , while the strategies of the tobacco industry choke local economies, leading them straight into misery. Smoking causes serious health problems, not only to each individual, but also to the planet itself: Smoking creates deserts. The expanding cultivation of tobacco requires razing of entire forests, both for new farmland and as source of fuel for drying tobacco leaves. The habit of smoking is causing ecological change of global dimensions. Original titel: Smoke sacrifice A film by Peter Heller © 2003, Filmkraft Peter Heller
