The Brief, Violent Life of Billy The Kid

The orphan teen who became the most wanted man in the West. A fascinating look at the boy behind the myth, BILLY THE KID puts a human face on the legend who in just a few short years transformed himself from a skinny orphan boy to the most feared man in the West to an enduring icon. On April 28, 1881, twenty-one-year-old Henry McCarty, a.k.a. Billy the Kid, just days from being hanged for murder, outfoxed his jailers and electrified the nation with the latest in a long line of miraculous escapes. An outlaw with a deadly reputation, the young man was finally gunned down by the ambitious sheriff Pat Garrett just a few weeks later. The felling of one of the most notorious criminals of the age made front-page news and marked the end of Henry — but it was the beginning of one of the West’s most enduring legends. Demonized by the lawman that killed him, the Kid was soon mythologized by a never-ending stream of dime store novels and big-screen dramas, portrayed by everyone from Paul Newman

A perspective on how graffiti has paved the way for many successful artists today. The story is told by the artists themselves on their journey from tagging graffiti on city walls to becoming respected icons in the cities they serve. They have proven that art is something that can influence, create emotion, inspire, and bring culture to an area. As the film progresses you see the difficulties they have endured and public criticism of their work. Today these murals bring in big advertising dollars from some of the biggest companies. They hire artists to paint murals and design art for campaigns to promote their brands. The murals they produce are nothing short of awe-inspiring from their sheer size to the complexity of the art piece. Their portfolios extend from massive spray painted murals on city walls to fine art gallery showings. The graffiti scene at one point was an underground subculture that has transformed into a legitimate profession. This film offers insights into the struggles and successes of four artists from different cities as they tell how they overcame adversity

JD Vance: From Trump critic to vice president

From hillbilly to the White House: J. D. Vance’s rise to become Trump’s vice-president is seen by many as symbolic of a worrying trend in the US that’s further polarizing society. J. D. Vance’s story is the story of an America that has long felt overlooked. An America of the white working class, marked by economic decline, the opioid crisis and the aftermath of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. An America that fears losing even the little that it still holds on to, through migration and social upheaval. J. D. Vance has undergone a remarkable transformation: from a fierce critic of Donald Trump to a loyal supporter of the MAGA movement and, ultimately, Trump’s vice-president. As far as his supporters are concerned, it is a career trajectory that gives him credibility. Critics, on the other hand, see in his politics a dynamic that could upset the political balance in the US and endanger democracy. Some already regard him as a potential contender for the presidency. ______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Watch top documentaries from German

"I said, 'No, I don’t want that because it’s boring,'" Neele recalls. Her parents strongly supported her decision to pursue a career in dance and acting. After nine years in a permanent position with a dance theater company in Bremen, she landed a role in a successful TV series. She then took the step into freelance work. However, she does face certain challenges at castings or when learning scripts. "I need time, but they always want things done quickly, quickly, quickly," Neele says. The pressure to secure steady work and earn enough money is high. At the same time, the acting

Immigration Under President Trump’s First Term | Kids Caught in the Crackdown (full documentary)

With @AssociatedPress, an Emmy Award-winning examination into conditions inside federally-funded shelter programs for detained migrant children and the lasting impact on kids who were held in U.S. government custody. (Aired 2019) Detention of migrant children climbed to historic levels during President Donald Trump’s first term. Drawing on confidential government data obtained by @AssociatedPress, "Caught in the Crackdown” revealed how many migrant kids were being held — and where — at any given time. With unique access — including inside a “tender age” shelter that held some of the youngest children in government custody — the film illuminated what happened when a child apprehended by Customs and Border Protection was handed over to the Department of Health and Human Services, known as HHS. The documentary examined how changes in policies for how sponsors were vetted meant kids were held in government custody for longer and longer periods, and in larger and larger numbers. In 2020, the documentary was honored with a News Emmy in the “Outstanding Continuing Coverage of a News Story in a Newsmagazine” category. “Kids Caught in the Crackdown”

Biography documentaries trace the lives of political leaders, artists, innovators, explorers and other influential figures. They connect private experience with public events while showing how reputations are created and contested.

Compare the voices included in each portrait and consider what the film leaves out. A useful biography identifies sources, avoids treating achievement as inevitable and places an individual within the institutions and period around them.

Every documentary opens in an official original platform player and includes a synopsis, clear source attribution and viewing information. Browse the complete selection above or use the category menu to explore another subject.
