About Immigration Under President Trump’s First Term | Kids Caught in the Crackdown (full documentary)

With @AssociatedPress, an Emmy Award-winning examination into conditions inside federally-funded shelter programs for detained migrant children and the lasting impact on kids who were held in U.S. government custody. (Aired 2019) Detention of migrant children climbed to historic levels during President Donald Trump’s first term. Drawing on confidential government data obtained by @AssociatedPress, "Caught in the Crackdown” revealed how many migrant kids were being held — and where — at any given time. With unique access — including inside a “tender age” shelter that held some of the youngest children in government custody — the film illuminated what happened when a child apprehended by Customs and Border Protection was handed over to the Department of Health and Human Services, known as HHS. The documentary examined how changes in policies for how sponsors were vetted meant kids were held in government custody for longer and longer periods, and in larger and larger numbers. In 2020, the documentary was honored with a News Emmy in the “Outstanding Continuing Coverage of a News Story in a Newsmagazine” category. “Kids Caught in the Crackdown”

JD Vance: From Trump critic to vice president

From hillbilly to the White House: J. D. Vance’s rise to become Trump’s vice-president is seen by many as symbolic of a worrying trend in the US that’s further polarizing society. J. D. Vance’s story is the story of an America that has long felt overlooked. An America of the white working class, marked by economic decline, the opioid crisis and the aftermath of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. An America that fears losing even the little that it still holds on to, through migration and social upheaval. J. D. Vance has undergone a remarkable transformation: from a fierce critic of Donald Trump to a loyal supporter of the MAGA movement and, ultimately, Trump’s vice-president. As far as his supporters are concerned, it is a career trajectory that gives him credibility. Critics, on the other hand, see in his politics a dynamic that could upset the political balance in the US and endanger democracy. Some already regard him as a potential contender for the presidency. ______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Watch top documentaries from German
