Directly from the capital of America, this episode investigates how money and lobbyists have come to dominate the political process. Watch interviews with leaders of three watchdog monitoring organizations: Robert Weissman (Public Citizen), Mary Boyle (Common Cause), and Sheila Krumholz (Center for Responsive Politics). They all agree on the fact that money dominates politics, a problem that involves both Democratic and Republican parties. Political scientist William Hartung and anti-war activist David Swanson are a few of the interviewees to discuss the trillion dollars spent every year on weapons that are not needed, but heavily lobbied for. Oil expert Michael Klare suggests that the most powerful lobby of all is that of the oil industry or energy writ large – coal, natural gas, uranium – which are tied to other powerful economic interests such as automobile, highway construction, tourism. Former New York Times reporter Chris Hedges says the power of the military and corporations has led to a transformation of the US economy: “It’s a global Neo-Feudalism.
