The worldwide mountain of debt is more than 300 % of the world’s annual economic output. Since the pandemic, debt expansion is out of control. Will the system collapse under its weight? The film explores the significance of our debt situation, looking at true stories behind the situation, from a debtors' prison in Mississippi to the world’s most notoriously indebted country. When do debts become unsustainable? In Dubai the remnants of a past debt boom can be seen on the wayside: empty shells of grand buldings that were the ruin of many of investors. Yet the most outlandish project was "The World", a gigantic map of the world off the coast of the emirate, composed entirely of artificial islands. Josef Kleindienst, one of the only developers to have built on the islands, takes us on a tour of his luxury properties, designed as resorts for the super rich. Smoking has become less of a threat to the health of the developed world. Although consumer habits and cultivation have drastically changed in the northern hemisphere, the smoking industry now endangers the health of the rest of the world. A caravan of smoking cowboys and friendly camels invade Asian and African countries, carrying promises of a consumers’ paradise overseas. The souls of indigenous women and teenagers are conquered throughout the Third World , while the strategies of the tobacco industry choke local economies, leading them straight into misery. Smoking causes serious health problems, not only to each individual, but also to the planet itself: Smoking creates deserts. The expanding cultivation of tobacco requires razing of entire forests, both for new farmland and as source of fuel for drying tobacco leaves. In Bavaria, citizens consider financial solidarity with the Greeks as problematic, as well as the financial equalization among the federal states in Germany, for which Bavaria had to pay billions of euros. In Stuttgart, the protests about the controversial rail station project "Stuttgart 21" raises the question about the poeple's participation in political decisions. In Thuringia it comes to the lack of minimum wages and in North Rhine-Westphalia to the so called "Energiewende" decided by Angela Merkel, with all the contradictions involved. This travel through the states of Germany tries to illuminate the internal political challenges of a country, poorly known by its European neighbors.
