Documentary overview

About The global economy is a pyramid scheme | End of the Road (full documentary)

There was a time when one earner could support an entire family. However, due to escalating costs in the 1970s, it became necessary for wives to enter the workforce. By the 1990s, even two incomes were insufficient, leading families to abandon savings. By the 2000s, with both partners working and no savings, families began borrowing well beyond their means to cope with inflation. This documentary traces the global economic crisis from the Bretton Woods Agreement to the Nixon shock and the Occupy Wall Street movement. It reveals how the U.S. Federal Reserve has led not only the American economy but also the global economy to function much like a Ponzi scheme. Since the pandemic, debt expansion is out of control. Are we headed for another recession or a total economic collapse? ------- Chapters ▷ 00:00 – Intro ▷ 03:36 – Bretton Woods (1944) ▷ 05:35 – Nixon shock (1971) ▷ 07:53 – Fiat currency ▷ 09:50 – Ponzi scheme ▷ 11:20 – IOU bonds ▷ 16:10 – Inflation and purchasing power ▷ 21:30 – Occupy Wall Street (2008) ▷ 24:01

High inflation. Fear of recession. Disruptions, like the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. How did the U.S. economy get here? A two-hour documentary special traces the road to this moment, and the role of the Federal Reserve, the country’s central bank. FRONTLINE investigates the Fed’s epic economic experiment to revive the U.S. economy with what has been called an “easy money” policy and the far-reaching and sometimes unintended consequences. “If we hadn't been driving our economy for 14 years with easy money and then tried to really quickly undo that now, we wouldn't be having these problems,” former top banking regulator Sheila Bair said in the documentary. From the 2008 recession, to the COVID pandemic, to the rise in inflation, to the current economic uncertainty, “Age of Easy Money” charts the American economy’s tumultuous course, the fragility of the financial system and the widening gap between Wall Street and Main Street. The documentary examines what led to the Fed’s recent decisions to hike interest rates at a historic pace and probes the ongoing effects, offering a comprehensive and timely examination

Germany Today (French documentary about the political and economic situation in Germany)

Ten years ago, Germany was considered as the "sick man of Europe". However, during the last years, the country became the motor of the euro zone. Some praise the efficiency of the "German model", others criticize the merciless rigor of German Chancellor Angela Merkel. In Bavaria, citizens consider financial solidarity with the Greeks as problematic, as well as the financial equalization among the federal states in Germany, for which Bavaria had to pay billions of euros. In Stuttgart, the protests about the controversial rail station project "Stuttgart 21" raises the question about the poeple's participation in political decisions. In Thuringia it comes to the lack of minimum wages and in North Rhine-Westphalia to the so called "Energiewende" decided by Angela Merkel, with all the contradictions involved. This travel through the states of Germany tries to illuminate the internal political challenges of a country, poorly known by its European neighbors. Global Debt Crisis - The World on the Brink of Economic Collapse (Full Documentary, 2022)

The worldwide mountain of debt is more than 300 % of the world’s annual economic output. Since the pandemic, debt expansion is out of control. Will the system collapse under its weight? The film explores the significance of our debt situation, looking at true stories behind the situation, from a debtors' prison in Mississippi to the world’s most notoriously indebted country. When do debts become unsustainable? In Dubai the remnants of a past debt boom can be seen on the wayside: empty shells of grand buldings that were the ruin of many of investors. Yet the most outlandish project was "The World", a gigantic map of the world off the coast of the emirate, composed entirely of artificial islands. Josef Kleindienst, one of the only developers to have built on the islands, takes us on a tour of his luxury properties, designed as resorts for the super rich. The film looks at entire countries on a sugar high of cheap credit, as well as impoverished states on a precipice of debt. It also tracks the impact of debts on vulnerable

The bets were huge and risky: billions of dollars on the housing market. The upside was undeniable: superbanks reaped billions of dollars, dominated the landscape and gobbled up competitors. Then the bottom dropped out. (Aired 2009) Starting in 2008, in the worst economic crisis in decades, brand-name banks were on the brink. As the federal government implemented a massive intervention in the financial industry, FRONTLINE went behind closed doors to tell the story of how things went so wrong so fast and to document efforts to stabilize Wall Street. Veteran FRONTLINE producer Michael Kirk untangled the complicated financial and political web surrounding one particular superbank — Bank of America.
