"The Incredible Objects That Saved Ernest Shackleton's Life" Team History Hit is currently following in the footsteps of Anglo-Irish explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, hoping to locate the shipwreck of the Endurance in the Weddell Sea. In this video, Luke Tomes visits the National Maritime Museum to see a recently exhibited sledge recovered from Shackleton's Nimrod Expedition (1907-09). He also speaks to Senior Curator of Maritime Technologies, Jeremy Michell about some of the objects which saved the famous explorer's life. Meanwhile, Dan Snow is at Dulwich College, which houses the James Caird, a lifeboat in which Shackleton, Frank Worsley and 4 other men undertook a 1,300 kilometre journey from Elephant Island in the South Shetland Islands through the Southern Ocean to South Georgia as part of the rescue mission during the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914–1917.

The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is home to the worlds third largest coral barrier reef, and is home to all kinds of diverse species of flora and fauna. To take pressure off the reef and allow for regeneration, the retired Military ship Vandenberg was deliberately sunk in 2009 which has since given divers and marine life a new space to inhabit. However, one of its new inhabitants is the invasive worm snail, the Vandy. Could this non-native species spread past the ship and to other coral reefs?

The harsh environments of the deep ocean are an imposing challenge for a lone organism to face, as the dark conceals many dangers, while dazzling bioluminescence deceives unwitting prey. For this reason, deep sea animals tend not to spread out. Instead, wherever possible, they come together in their masses to create abundant patches of life in the lonely depths. Hotspots of biodiversity, in stark contrast with the otherwise barren stretch of darkness. Safety in numbers is a fool-proof survival strategy that increases their chances of finding food, evading predation, or having reproductive success in the endless blue. Molluscs like cephalopods and gastropods dominate the marine world. Inhabiting nearly every ecosystem from shallow reefs to deep sea vents and the pelagic midwater, the success of molluscs is unparalleled. Nearly 25% of all marine organisms are molluscs, including such oddities as sea snails, nudibranchs, and coleoids like squid with their specialised tentacles. Even the snails you might find in your garden belong to the molluscs, for this is the only phylum with species found in the sea, freshwater and on land. A testament to their adaptability. With an estimated 85,000 living species known to science, the abundance and diversity of molluscs is what allows them to occupy a great many niches and habitats, and diversify into an assortment of shapes and sizes. The smallest meiofauna molluscs grow to just 0.4 mm long, while in the pelagic deep they dominate as voracious predators, looming out of the dark. This is the alien world of molluscs. The Battles of Imphal and Kohima were a crucial turning point in the attempted Japanese invasion of India during World War Two. By October 1942 Singapore, Hong-Kong, Malaysia and Burma had all fallen to the Japanese; the Imperial army looked unbeatable. Yet it was then, when morale was at its lowest, that the new British commander Bill Slim set about reforming and rebuilding the Anglo-Indian British army. Slim aimed to revive Allied fortunes in the region – something many believed was an impossible task. Meanwhile, Japanese commander Renya Mutaguchi had ambitious plans of his own: the conquest of British India. To initiate this plan the Japanese first had to capture one key strategic town: Imphal, the gateway to India. The very close-run battles that followed - fought between March and July 1944 - were clashes on epic proportions as each side attempted to execute a master plan of their respective visionary generals. Military historian James Holland gets inside an operational T-34 tank, the pride and joy of the Soviet Union during the Second World War. Introduced in 1940, the T-34 was famously deployed with the Red Army against Operation Barbarossa - Nazi Germany's doomed invasion of Russia. Its 76.2 mm tank gun was more powerful than its contemporaries while its 60 degree sloped armour provided good protection against anti-tank weapons. In the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, Addo, there is a very unique herd of Elephants that has been pushed back from the brink of extinction. Due to large amounts of hunting and poaching by the turn of the 20th century, this herd had almost gone extinct, until they were given protected land in Addo Elephant National Park in 1931. The Catalina called Miss Pick Up was flown to Loch Ness on 17 October, and after landing on the loch the right engine failed to start. It is one of only 15 airworthy Catalinas in the world, and the only one in the UK. Built in the 1930s, the aircraft were used in anti-submarine warfare and for maritime rescues by Allied forces during World War Two with American Catalina crews being the Black Cats. In July of 1920, all eyes were on the Tennessee capital as Anti and Pro-suffragists each fought for their vision of a socially evolving the United States. One more state was needed to ratify the proposed amendment, and that duty rested solely on the shoulders of Tennessee. It passed by one swing vote, cast by a 24-year-old legislator, Harry Burn, whose mother had urged him to "Do the right thing".

One community on the coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts, USA, has come together to help rescue a rare species of Sea Turtle: The Kemp's Ridley. Every year these Endangered Turtles wash up onto the coast and risk hypothermia in the freezing cold temperatures. The Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary has been working with the New England Aquarium for twenty-five years to try and keep this rare species alive. American Airlines Flight 1420 was a flight from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to Little Rock National Airport in the United States. On June 1, 1999, the McDonnell Douglas MD-82 operating as Flight 1420 overran the runway upon landing in Little Rock and crashed. Eleven of the 145 people aboard were killed—the captain and 10 passengers. The Rare Brown Hyenas of Namibia. On the coast of Namibia there's a rare breed of brown Hyena, scarcely studied by humans until Ingrid Wiesel.
