Patrick McMillan takes us on a journey through the Clemson University Experimental Forest in the Piedmont region of South Carolina. Originally used as farmland, this forest of over 17,000 acres has been fully restored in the last 70 years and is now a center for biodiversity with migratory birds, native wildflowers, and even a swamp rabbit which is semiaquatic. McMillan meets up with two friends who also work at Clemson University, Ornithologist Dr. Drew, and Plant Ecologist Vic, where they discuss the migration patterns of some of the forests birds, and the different types of soil and its erosion patterns in the region.

In the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, Addo, there is a very unique herd of Elephants that has been pushed back from the brink of extinction. Due to large amounts of hunting and poaching by the turn of the 20th century, this herd had almost gone extinct, until they were given protected land in Addo Elephant National Park in 1931. Off the coast of Los Angeles, California, lies the beautiful island of Catalina. This island is home to unique animals and wildlife that isn't seen anywhere else in the world. While Western Lowland Gorillas are quite commonplace throughout Africa, Nyango is a female Cross River Gorilla and is one of the last of the species, as they are critically endangered. The Wonderfully Weird Naked Mole Rat. Naked Mole Rats, also known as sand puppies, are small rodents growing no bigger than 4 inches long. Perfectly adapted to its environment, the naked mole rat has been mocked for years due to its unusual appearance. Did you know that they behave like insects? Burrowing in a nest with a Queen at the helm of the colony? Or that they have tiny ears and eyes so that they can avoid getting sand in them? Elephant Shrews, also known as Jumping Shrews or Sengis, are tiny Mammals living in Africa. In spite of their name, they are neither an elephant nor are they a shrew! This shy, endangered animal has become the mascot of the incredible Arabuko National Park in Kenya. The income they attract via tourism pays for the education of local children, being part of the African community. These Lions started out life in a zoo, forced to perform for audiences every night. When the male lion eventually snapped and attacked a circus worker, they were sent to a zoo in Baia Mare, Romania. The lions were kept in tiny cages with concrete flooring, trapped together for years until Romania joining the EU meant that the zoo had to close, and the lions faced euthanasia if a new home wasn't found for them. In Kosovo, Brown Bears are being used by Private Zoos and Restaurants to bring in an audience. Often this means that the bears are cramped into small cages, with concrete flooring and none of the water and plants that they need to survive. In one restaurant, five fully grown bears are kept in the same cage, causing them to fight each other and inflict terrible injuries. Four Paws rescue the bears from these unfit habitats and bring them to their own bear sanctuary, with plenty of space for them to roam and grow. Meanwhile, one of Europe's last herds of wild horses in under threat from the government as they're blamed for destroying local wildlife. When a nearby zoo became desperate for money, they started selling off their animals to people living nearby. This is how a family with six children ended up with two lion cubs living with them inside their small home.
