Septimius Severus, a Roman emperor of African descent, ruled during the early 3rd century and led a significant campaign in Britain to unify the island under Roman rule. Luke Tomes returns to the Royal Armouries in Leeds to fire some of the most iconic weapons of the Second World War belonging to the Soviet Red Army. As always he is joined by Keeper of Firearms & Artillery, Jonathan Ferguson who talks him through the history of all the pistols, rifles and machine guns employed in the conflict. First up is the TT-33, a sidearm equipped by most soldiers of the Soviet Army during the Second World War. The TT-33 or ‘Tokarev’ Pistol was named after its designer Fedor Tokarev, and was initially conceived as a modern replacement for the aging Nagant M1895 revolver. The simplicity of its design as well as an improvement in firepower would result in the production of over a million of the pistols by the end of the conflict. Second is the Mosin-Nagant bolt-action rifle, the standard infantry weapon of the Red Army during World War II. Initial investigations suggested the material was not a weather balloon, but its origins remained unclear. Ray Santilli, who claimed to possess a 1947 alien autopsy film, later admitted the footage was partially "restored" due to degradation. Questions arose about why two versions of the film existed, fueling skepticism. Santilli's story and claims about the film's authenticity shifted over the years, casting doubt on its validity. Bears of Durango explores the increasing conflict between humans and bears in Durango, Colorado, as the town grows and encroaches on bear habitats. Over the course of six years, researchers with Colorado Parks and Wildlife study bear behaviour and how urban development impacts the species. Researchers track and monitor over 600 bears, examining how human activities like trash dumping and food availability in urban areas affect bear behaviour. It also highlights the challenges of managing wildlife populations, especially when bears begin to rely on human-provided food sources. Through this research, the team aims to find ways for people and bears to coexist, promoting policies like bear-proof trash cans and better community practices.

A high-tech Scandinavian survey vessel, Stril Explorer, leads an international team to uncover archaeological mysteries beneath the Black Sea, using advanced sonar and remotely operated vehicles.
