About U.S. inequality from Shays' Rebellion to Occupy Wall Street | Who Rules America? (2/6)

The second episode of "Who Rules America" goes back to the origins of the American Revolution to show how the fight against entrenched wealth and privilege dates back hundreds of years. Danny Schechter, the "News Dissector", travels to Western Massachusetts to explore the story of Shays' Rebellion, often considered the Occupy Wall Street of its era. The journey continues along Boston's Freedom Trail to debate the revolutionary and non-revolutionary aspects of the American Revolution. Indigenous activist Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz challenges the narrative of a true revolution, calling it a war on independence instead. She argues it lacked an anti-colonial agenda: and "democracy has always been an oligarchy". Modern-day economic inequality is placed in a historical context. ------- Chapters ▷ 00:00 – The History of the Fight for Democracy in America ▷ 01:23 – Occupy Wall Street ▷ 04:01 – American Revolution ▷ 05:18 – Freedom Trail ▷ 09:50 – Shays's Rebellion ▷ 14:40 – Racial equality & anti-colonialism ▷ 19:01 – Right-wing Tea Party ▷ 24:16 – Next episode ▷ 24:38 – Credits ------- ------- Six decades after C. Effective propaganda must pretend to have different points of view | Who Rules America? (4/6)

The more you watch, the less you know. This episode explores the power of an unaccountable media to set the agenda. Jeff Cohen, who worked in major media and is now one its feistiest critics, suggests that the people who rules America, or even owns America, are the ones who propagandize to America. Not long ago, the big six media conglomerates — General Electric, News Corporation, Disney, Viacom, Time Warner, and CBS — ruled the industry. Since most of them were owned by financial corporations like hedge funds and mutual fund companies, you would not see a lot of criticism going that way, explains the asset manager Barry James Dyke. Similarly, the financial journalist Max Keiser adds that the mainstream media is deeply in debt, unlikely to insult the bankers who have the power to cut off their lines of credit. The documentary also analyses whether the media strengthens democracy or divides people. It is not just a matter of political biases, but the very fact that news organizations are businesses themselves, "entertainifying" the sector to compete with one another.
