The Jordan is the most important source of water for Jordanians, Israelis and Palestinians. But intensive farming is robbing the sacred river of its water. Hardly a drop of water makes it to the estuary of the Colorado. Once it reaches Mexico, after its journey through the Rocky Mountains, the Grand Canyon and Nevada, the river is dry – and has been for decades. The demand for water in its catchment area is just too big. But conservationists are now working to make the estuary green again. Winter in the Iberian Peninsula is a brutal test of endurance where only the strongest survive. This landscape remains a stronghold for some of the most formidable species in Europe, from massive vultures with telescopic vision to the aggressive wild cattle that still roam these ancient pastures. While the rest of the continent freezes, millions of migratory birds arrive here to find sanctuary in the oak and cork forests, a unique ecosystem that has remained largely unchanged since the Middle Ages.

The arc of Tyrrhenian volcanoes that stretches from Pozzuoli north of Naples to Sicily is one of the most active – and little known – in the world. The archetypal “restless volcano” is also close to one of Europe’s most densely populated areas. Though it hasn’t erupted since 1538, it has shown worrying signs on and off since the 1970s. The Campi Flegrei is an area north of Naples that occupies a 20km wide volcanic crater at sea level. Possibly more dangerous than Vesuvius but less imposing as a Volcano is the 20 km wide caldera known as the Campi Flegrei. While Vesuvius rises high out of the Campania plain the Campi Flegrei volcano is at sea level and visibly active. The area around the volcano is densely inhabited: Pozzuoli is a working class suburb of Naples. It has been a place of religious cult since the first Greek settlements.
