About From Cardiac Arrest to the World's Fittest Man with a Donor Heart - The Heart that Defied Science

Cardiac arrest – a nightmare. For the triathlete Elmar Sprink – bitter truth. At the age of 38, his heart suddenly stopped. Resuscitation, intensive care unit and the life-saving heart-lung machine followed. Two years later: the longed heart transplant. A new life starts but it’s a race against time. On average, a heart transplant beats for 10 years. Elmar is making every effort to extend this period. He trained hard, took part in an IRONMAN already one year after the surgery, and followed further competitions. The doctors attest to him that he is the world's fittest man with a donor heart. A medical sensation: New nerve cells grow around the foreign organ – this phenomenon has never been observed in an adult heart recipient. To find out more, in September 2016, physicians examined Elmar's heart under extreme stress at the TransAlpine Run, where he was the first to enter with a transplanted heart. But Elmar does not just want to be a part of successful transplant research. Together with him, the film meets the leading cardiac specialists and scientists in

Hamilton Naki & Christian Barnard: The Untold Truth Behind the World's First Heart Transplant

Cape Town, 1967 – The first human heart was successfully transplanted from one person to another by Dr. Christian Barnard. Barnard experienced a meteoric rise into the world of glamour and the jet set, unlike any other doctor before or since. The first heart transplant took place in a country with the most radical race laws in the world — the team of the first heart transplant was presented to the international press as entirely white. Post-Apartheid, 2003 – A Black man named Hamilton Naki suddenly claimed he had been part of the team during the first heart transplant in 1967. In an interview with an American TV station, Hamilton Naki said that he had carried the donor’s heart from Denise Darvall into the adjoining operating theater and had helped Barnard transplant it into Washkansky’s open chest. Naki died in 2005. Everyone who knew him, Black or white, spoke of him with great respect. He was an honest worker, a very talented surgeon, hardworking but humble. Naki worked for decades in the animal laboratory where Barnard carried out crucial experiments
