The European blue fin tuna measures up to 5 metres long and weighs as much as 600 kg. Every year it travels across the Atlantic Ocean, returning to the Mediterranean to spawn. Although it has long been established that overfishing has left the tuna stocks close to collapse, these days the whole swarm is captured while spawning, thus preventing the replenishing of resources. No other fish in the world fetches such high prices. In Japan, it feeds a profit-driven machinery of gigantic proportions. The fishermen, too, are facing imminent extinction. The less tuna remains, the more ruthless the fight for the last of this valuable resource becomes: Raphaël stretches every legal loophole to the limit; his boats have repeatedly been impounded. Roger is one of the few who has stuck to the EU quotas and is now forced to sell his boat.
