FRONTLINE and NPR followed the trail of one of the final detainees released by the Obama administration from the prison at Guantanamo Bay. (Aired 2017) When President Barack Obama first took office, he signed an executive order to close the controversial military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba — where the U.S. has held terror suspects for years without charges. Though he didn’t succeed in closing Gitmo, a symbol of the post-9/11 “war on terror,” Obama made a final push to clear out the camp before President Donald Trump took over. The documentary “Out of Gitmo” examines the challenges and complexities of releasing men who were once deemed “indefinite detainees” — those never charged with a crime but considered too great a risk to let go. “Out of Gitmo” was a collaboration with NPR and WGBH News. Mysteries of the Twilight Zone | Worlds of the Deep

In the deep ocean, life is concentrated at chemosynthetic oases where primary production is made possible via chemosynthesis at cold seeps and deep sea hydrothermal vents. The non-chemosynthetic regions of the deep are divided into two very different worlds. First is the midwater, where pelagic wanderers tread migratory routes that span entire oceans, and planktonic drifters and their predators take part in bioluminescent light shows. It is separated into zones based on depth, including the sunlight zone (epipelagic), twilight zone (mesopelagic), midnight zone (bathypelagic), abyssal and hadal zones. And below, lies the deep sea floor. A kingdom of mud and ooze, where sessile creatures cling to any solid outcrop and corals craft kingdoms on the seamount crusts. The worlds of the deep sea could not be more different, and yet their stories are fundamentally intertwined. In this episode, we delve into the Twilight Zone. Pirate Expert Rates Scenes From Hollywood Movies About Piracy

Iszi Lawrence, comedian, podcaster and history presenter rates portrayals of pirates in four Hollywood movies. Iszi worked on the Netflix documentary 'The Lost Pirate Kingdom' and is the author of Blackbeard's Treasure, a tale set in the eighteenth century during the golden age of piracy in the Caribbean. Iszi first reviews scenes from 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' (2003). She thinks Johnny Depp's portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow as a 'rockstar' is accurate, given contemporary perceptions of pirate captains. Next, she looks at modern piracy in 'Captain Phillips' (2013), which recreates the true story of the Maersk Alabama hijacking by Somali pirates. Scenes from the classic film 'Treasure Island' (1950) are broken down next. Robert Newton's version of Long John Silver, with his distinct West Country accent, has been credited with creating the archetypal pirate for modern film. Finally, Iszi reviews more humorous depictions of pirates in 'Muppet Treasure Island' (1996), starring Tim Curry as Long John Silver.

In 865 AD, England was invaded by the Great Heathen Army. This was an army that would change Britain forever. It would lay siege to towns and cities like York, attack monasteries and kill kings - the most famous of course being St Edmund, who was brutally beheaded by the Norse warriors in 869 AD. Dan Snow was recently joined by bioarchaeologist and Viking specialist Cat Jarman on a road trip across England to retrace the path of this conquering Viking Army.

Could You Survive in the Duke of Wellington's Army?' During the Napoleonic Wars the British Army experienced a time of rapid change. At the beginning of the French Revolutionary Wars in 1793, the army was a small, awkwardly administered force of barely 40,000 men. By the end of the period, the numbers had vastly increased to over a quarter of a million soldiers by 1813. Whilst the battlefields of the early 1800s looked similar to those of centuries gone by, with columns of infantry advancing slowly toward the enemy musket volleys, the British army was starting to diversify, adding specialised and elite units to its forces. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross - The Author of "On Death and Dying" and Pioneer of Palliative Care

Elisabeth Kübler-Ross has dedicated her life to death and dying, for which she has gained worldwide recognition. With her humane and down-to-earth approach, she has done much to destigmatize death and improve the treatment of terminally ill patients of all ages. She led an extraordinary life, beginning with her birth in Switzerland in 1926 as a 1 kilo triplet. She went to medical school against her parents' wishes and had to fight to be recognized as a woman physician and psychiatrist in the United States. Her seminal book, "On Death and Dying", brought her international fame. This intimate portrait was filmed in 2002, while she was living as a recluse in the desert, waiting - as she says - for her own death. ------- Chapters ▷ 0:00 - Intro ▷ 02:07 - Facing Death ▷ 01:20:08 - Credits ------- ------- In our contemporary societies, death remains a taboo that we dare not face, as it raises questions and confronts us with the unknown and uncertainty.
