The Incredible Historic Shipwrecks Still Lying in British Rivers' In 2013, a survey around the UK identified 199 different assemblages of hulks, remains of craft. These included paddle ships, ferries, steamboats, sail ships, submarines and fishing boats. All around the UK, in rivers and streams, and in the mud on the side of riverbeds are the remains of our maritime past, which helps us understand who were are today. In this stunning documentary, historian and archaeologist Dr Sam Willis travels along the River Dart, from Totnes to Dartmouth, to explore the wreckage of ships of our maritime past. Along the way Sam finds wreckage of an old Edwardian paddle steamer, a floating harbour used during the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944 and an 18th Century bathing house. He also stops off at the temporary residence of best-selling novelist and crime writer, Agatha Christie.

Two American schooners, Hamilton and Scourge, sank in Lake Ontario during a storm in the War of 1812, with over 80 sailors lost. These wrecks are now among the best-preserved wooden shipwrecks, thanks to the cold, freshwater environment. Father-and-son divers, Mike and Warren Fletcher, joined a scientific expedition to explore the wrecks. The challenge was accessing the deep wrecks, as scuba diving was limited, requiring remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to penetrate the schooners' interiors. To understand the crew's experience, the Fletchers used a shipwreck simulator to recreate the storm conditions. They aimed to learn why so many sailors were trapped and drowned, with hypotheses pointing to the storm's sudden intensity and structural issues on the ships.

Launched on 14 February 1939, the German flagship and pride of the Kriegsmarine, Bismarck was launched. In the darkness of the early morning of the 19 May 1941, Bismarck slipped out of harbour on the Baltic coast and started making its way on its maiden voyage, Operation Rheinubung. The German Navy High Command's plan was to disrupt and attack Allied merchant shipping, to starve Britain of precious materials and food. Prinz Eugen (the ship accompanying Bismarck) had a film crew on board - Bismarck’s first action was going to be filmed. Desperate to protect its Atlantic trade routes, the admiralty of the Royal Navy sent her best battleships, including the mighty HMS Hood to intercept the German sortie and sink Bismarck. This is a definitive account of the Royal Navy's ultimate success in sinking the Bismarck.
