About Trump and power - A deep divide across America

A cinematic journey through the first year of Donald Trump's second term as president. Fear, hope, protest, loyalty and disappointment all shape this portrait of the US as a nation in turmoil. Washington, D.C., and Piedmont, West Virginia. As President Trump's second term sparks fear and alarm in the liberal capital, coal country in Appalachia clings to the hope of a long-awaited economic turnaround. Only a two-and-a-half-hour drive separates Washington, D.C., from Piedmont, West Virginia — yet the two places exist in hugely different cultural worlds. In liberal D.C., shock about Donald Trump's return for a second term runs deep. Many federal workers fear for their jobs, rights and democracy. In coal country, by contrast, Trump is seen as the last hope for an economic revival. Coal trains may still rumble through town, but factories stand empty and drug problems are tearing through the community. Even so, there's tremendous resilience to be found here. This documentary follows both places over the course of a year, exploring how people with sharply contrasting realities see Trump's return to the presidency. In Washington

9/11 - The day that changed the world

On September 11th, 2001, four hijacked airplanes struck the heart of America. At 8:46 am, New York time, the first airplane crashed into the World Trade Centre -- an attack whose global consequences still reverberate to this day. As early as 1999, Osama bin Laden devised a plan to use civilian aircraft as weapons. The targets were chosen for their symbolic significance to the USA: The World Trade Centre was an economic hub, the Pentagon was the military nerve center, and the White House was the center of political power. But how could the attack manage to succeed? Months before the attacks, the CIA had crucial leads - including the names of known terrorists. Yet they failed to put the puzzle together. This documentary retraces the attacks of September 11th, 2001 in precise chronological order - in the air, at Ground Zero, in newsrooms and in the centers of power in the USA. Archival footage, audio recordings and findings from the 9/11 Commission Report make it possible to reconstruct the events, almost in real time. "9/11 - The Day that

India's little-known minority - The Siddi and the Olympic dream

Nimeksha Siddi is 18 years old and India's sprinting hope for the 2028 Olympics. Nimeksha belongs to the Siddi ethnic group, whose daily lives are marked by racism and exclusion. The 18-year-old sprinter Nimeksha flies down the home straight like a bolt of lightning. She's a Siddi. Hardly anyone knows about her people, not even in India, where the Siddi have lived for 500 years. Her ancestors came to India from Africa as slaves or mercenaries. It's not known how many Siddi live in India. They all have the surname Siddi. They are Muslim, Christian or Hindu - and are often mistaken for tourists by many Indians. Most live in poverty, scraping by as day laborers, gathering plants, honey or rubber. In 1983, India's Minister for Sport launched a program aimed at tapping into the community's athletic potential. Children from Siddi villages were recruited and coached in running. One of the most successful was Kamala Siddi. At the age of 15, she set a national record in the pentathlon, won bronze and gold at international level, and was rewarded with

How to unlearn hate - Stories of courage, hope, and reconciliation

How do we break free from a spiral of hate? This documentary follows people in Bosnia, Mexico, and Canada who have found ways to deal with hate—and to overcome it. As the host of a children’s show, Tobi Krell is surrounded by closeness and trust. At the same time, he observes a growing coarsening of society worldwide: People treat one another with aggression, violence, and hostile stereotypes. He sets out to look for approaches to breaking the cycle of hate. In Sarajevo, he meets Adnan, a war veteran. Three decades after the end of the Bosnian War, tensions remain palpable. Adnan grapples with the question of how to dispel stereotypes—and what it takes to counter them in everyday life. In Canada, Tobi Krell meets Lauren and her mother. As a teenager, Lauren joined a far-right group. The two explain how they were able to stay in touch despite this experience—and what role personal bonds play in leaving such groups. In Monterrey, in northeastern Mexico, Anni shares her experiences with domestic violence. She shows how she has learned to reflect on

Romanticism After 1789: Géricault's Raft, Delacroix's Liberty, Turner and Goya

1789 shattered old certainties and ignited Romantic art. This episode traces how revolution, the sublime, and the individual reshaped painting across Europe. From the fall of the Bastille, Western artists challenged neoclassical rules and elevated private feeling, nature, and the heroic or tragic individual. We unpack Edmund Burke's pairing of beauty and the sublime and Jean-Jacques Rousseau's call for the dignity of the individual that fueled this turn. In France, Jacques-Louis David bridges neoclassicism and romantic impulse, from the Oath of the Horatii to Napoleon at the St Bernard Pass, while his pupil Antoine-Jean Gros intensifies emotion. Théodore Géricault transforms a recent disaster into monumental history in The Raft of the Medusa, rebuilding the raft from a survivor's model and seizing the moment a rescue ship is sighted but sails on; later he explores extreme states in portraits from an asylum. Eugène Delacroix advances the movement with Dante and Virgil, The Massacre at Chios, The Death of Sardanapalus, and the emblematic Liberty Leading the People, where a red-capped, tricolor-bearing Liberty strides with citizens of every class over the July barricades.
