Hitler sought the Spear of Destiny, believed to be the weapon that pierced Jesus Christ's side, as a symbol of power and invincibility. In 1938, after annexing Austria, Hitler seized the spear from a museum in Vienna, taking it to Nuremberg to reinforce his image as the successor to the Holy Roman emperors. Art historian and U.S. Army officer Walter Horn, a German émigré, was tasked with tracking down the spear after it vanished during World War II. Following leads from German prisoners, Horn located the spear in a hidden vault beneath Nuremberg Castle, alongside other looted treasures.
