Medical History: The Gruesome Origins of Surgery

What was it actually like to fight in a medieval battle? Luke Tomes travels to the Battle of Evesham Festival to take part in a live reenactment of the battle that took place in Worcestershire in 1265. All soldiers have been told to show Luke no mercy, as he dons his chainmail and helmet with Go Pros attached. As part of his experience, Luke is joined by medieval historian Matt Lewis, who talks him through the real events that took place during the Second Barons War over 750 years ago, including some unbelievable anecdotes involving the King (Henry III), Simon De Montfort (the rebel leader of baronial forces) and the King's son, Prince Edward (later known as 'Longshanks', Hammer of the Scots). Forget the words put into his mouth by Shakespeare and interpreted by actors like Laurence Olivier, this is as close as we can get to how Richard spoke his own words over 500 years ago. History Hit has had special access to the detailed investigation pioneered by voice coach Yvonne Morley-Chisholm. Facial reconstruction specialist Professor Caroline Wilkinson and her team at FaceLab have painstakingly recreated Richard's face, using the primary evidence of his skull, rediscovered in 2012. The computer model is is being reanimated to speak Richard's own words. To get these words right Yvonne has brought in top experts from many fields, including historic speech, regional pronunciation, anatomy, theatre, history, psychology and even dentistry.
