This documentary tells the true story of Rudolf Vrba, a Slovak Jewish teenager who was imprisoned in a major wartime concentration camp. While working inside the camp system, Vrba witnessed the mass persecution and killing of prisoners and secretly memorized transport records, numbers, and names. In April 1944, he and Fred Wetzler hid for days before escaping and making a dangerous journey of over 140 km to Slovakia. There, they reported what became known as the Vrba-Wetzler Report, one of the first detailed eyewitness accounts of what was happening inside the camp system to reach the outside world. The report was eventually shared with Allied governments, religious leaders, and major international media outlets. Although it initially faced resistance and delays in being widely published, it later helped trigger global awareness and urgent diplomatic pressure, which contributed to the halting of further deportations from Hungary, saving an estimated 120,000 lives, though hundreds of thousands had already been lost.
