In September 1944, after the liberation of much of France and Belgium, the Western Allies believed they had an opportunity to penetrate rapidly into Germany and accelerate the end of World War II. British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery proposed Operation Market Garden, an ambitious plan that combined a gigantic airborne assault with the advance of ground forces through the Netherlands. Thousands of American, British, and Polish paratroopers were to capture a chain of strategic bridges over rivers and canals, while the British XXX Corps advanced along a narrow highway to link up with them. The ultimate objective was Arnhem, where the British 1st Airborne Division was to conquer the important bridge over the Rhine. If the operation succeeded, the Allies could cross one of the last major natural barriers before Germany's industrial heartland. ​The operation began
