British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery proposed Operation Market Garden, an ambitious plan that combined a gigantic airborne assault with the advance of ground forces through the Netherlands. Thousands of American, British, and Polish paratroopers were to capture a chain of strategic bridges over rivers and canals, while the British XXX Corps advanced along a narrow highway to link up with them. The ultimate objective was Arnhem, where the British 1st Airborne Division was to conquer the important bridge over the Rhine.
