Dan Snow investigates the world-changing events of April 19th 1775. On April 19th 1775, the first muskets were fired in the American War of Independence - the famous "shot heard round the world". 2023 marks the 25th anniversary of signing of The Belfast (Good Friday) Agreement, which brought an end to 30 years of conflict in Northern Ireland known as 'the Troubles'. Spanning from the late-18th to early-21st Century, Dan charts the development of battle tactics and strategy, as well as the rapid evolution of weapons technology which have transformed the battlefield. In the second episode, starting of with Fury (2014) starring Bard Pitt and Shia LaBoeuf, Dan explains how the concept of a pitched battle was made obsolete by the introduction of armoured vehicles, more specifically, tanks. Although tanks had been introduced in the latter years of the First World War, it was only in the Second World War that they became integral to the strategies of Allied and Axis armies.
