Germany's Wild Reservoirs | Wildlife Documentary Nowhere in Germany does it rain as much as here: The 'Bergisches Land' in North-Rhine Westphalia. More than 130 years ago, people began to build dams - mainly for flood protection and as a drinking water reservoir. They all have one thing in common: they change the character of a river enormously. As a result, completely diverse ecosystems have developed: where the dipper once dived for insect larvae, cormorants, and gray herons now fish, swans and coots cavort. In recent summers, even greater challenges have emerged: the effects of climate change - from extreme drought to destructive floods. On a smaller scale, a rather industrious dam master is operating flood protection: The Beaver. However, the water masses of the Wupper tore away half of his majestic timber castle - and the four young beaver kids were not seen again afterward. Did they survive? Not everyone can cope with the constant change in the dams, but they still remain an important wonder of engineering for many: for us humans as well as for a number

Nyiragongo, one of the world's most active and deadly volcanos, could erupt at any time

Located in Democratic Republic of Congo, at the border of Rwanda, the volcano Nyiragongo is considered to be the most active in Africa. Its permanent lake of lava is the biggest of the planet. This volcanic phenomenon, rare and unknown, has been revealed to the public by Haroun Tazieff in 1958 in its movie “Devils’ Rendez-Vous”. Its devastating eruptions threaten the 1 million inhabitants of the city of Goma, which is located at its bottom. The most important was in 1977. The most recent, in 2002, bothered the scientist community because of its violence. For the Volcanologist Observatory of Goma, it’s a big challenge: increase the knowledge to anticipate the future eruptions and avoid catastrophes. It’s a very complex objective in a very instable region, geologically but also politically. Moreover, to go down inside the crater is very difficult and needs very special competences and experiments. A team of French and Swiss volunteers, specialists of volcanologic expeditions has taken up the challenge: they go the closest to the boiling lake of lava, in the very heart of the volcano, in

Patagonia is probably the richest area for wildlife in South America, including the marine life of five penguin species - Magellanic, Humboldt, Gentoo, Southern Rockhopper, and King. Depending on the species and the season, the inquisitive creatures can be seen anywhere from Punta Arenas to Tierra del Fuego. Patagonia is also home to sea lions, fur seals, and elephant seals and is made up of the Andes mountains as well as deserts, glaciers, and grasslands. Inside the Peninsula is an arid scrubland, part of the windswept Patagonian plain that covers most of southern Argentina. It is home to large colonies of up to 100 Patagonian hares looking to pair for life.
